LX450 - Lightforce 170 Striker lights and IPF
M21 Magic 55 watt fog lights:

The Lightforce lights are wired through
the high beam circuit. Thus the lights will also flash when the "flash to pass"
switch is activated if the Lightforce switch is armed. These have Lightforce 100
watt vertical filament bulbs (horizontal filament bulbs that cast a broader oval
beam are available). The covers snap off for cleaning or changing to another
pattern or color. I am using a clear wide angle cover on the right light and a
clear spot cover on the left light. I like the combined pattern better than two
spots. Lightforce offers combo kits with one wide angle and one spot cover. Each
light is adjustable by rotating the entire housing. The pattern varies from a
tight spot with the housing all the way it, to a wider pattern with it screwed
out. After about 1 1/2 turns a dark spot develops in the center, much like a
Maglight flashlight. I have the lights set at about 3/4 turn out. I bought the
pair from my local Central 4WD store for US$188 including tax. This was by far
the best price I found anywhere - MSRP is about US$230.
The rear of the light housings _barely_
clear the Lexus grill when aimed correctly (cover 90 degrees to the ground). I
had to rotate the high-rise mounts 180 degrees to get the rear of the lights to
clear. The harness (wiring kit is not included) is a 150 watt IPF harness
obtained from ARB in Seattle for US$40. I secured a loop of the split looms to
the bases to prevent stress on the splices, which are environmental heat-shrink
crimp splices.
The IPF fog lights have 55 watt H3 bulbs
and are wired through the ignition switch so that I can use them as daytime
running lights, as well as keeping them on continuously regardless of main beam
selection. They cast an pale amber wide beam that fills in the dark spot between
the low beam pattern and the front bumper, as well as illuminating the shoulder.
The perimeter of the lens glows a ghostly blue for 15 minutes after the lights
are turned off - it's very eerie. The mounts are secured with double sided tape,
as well as three screws drilled and tapped holes in the Slee bumper.
The
reason I bought the Lightforce 170s (6.7 inches OD) rather than the 240s (9.5
inches OD) is that I thought the bigger lights would overwhelm the front of the
truck. The 170s look balanced with the other lighting, and provide nearly as
much candlepower and range as the larger lights.
The
two lights switches are IPF surface mount. The right switch is for the fogs, the
left for the driving lights. The fog switch came with the IPF fog light kit. I
ordered the second switch from ARB in Seattle. The green LED indicates power is
being supplied to the switch. The amber LED indicates the lights are on. The BIG
red lighted switch is for my Hella 55 watt backup light. It glows very brightly
when on so that I won't accidently leave the light on.
Each
switch attaches to the blank factory switch plate with double-sided carpet tape.
I notched the bottom of each plate and receptacle with a round rat-tail file to
provide room for the wires.
