Yuasa YTZ7S Battery

Update 08/31/09: Thanks to Rob Truex for sending me some very nice pics of the two batteries and boxes, so you can easily see the size differences.

At three years old, my OEM battery was getting tired. The hot setup for the RFS is the high performance Yuasa YTZ7S sealed battery which is rated at 130 CCA and 7 Amp-hr. This is a MUCH higher capacity than the small pre-'05 batteries, and a little hotter than the big OEM battery in my bike (6 Amp-hr) If you have an earlier bike, you can buy an '05 battery box (P/N 59011055100) for around US$8 MSRP, which is half an inch taller and will hold the larger battery.

Beware the clones! There are many Chinese knock-offs advertising this same part number, but they do NOT share the same robust construction or CCA rating! They may work for a while, but they won't last or spin the engine over like this one.

Side by side, the Yuasa and the tired Exide are perfect matches, and the new battery is an easy drop-in for my "late '05" bike, which already had the deeper box installed.

Installed with the terminals down, to protect them from seat damage and possible shorting out to tools.

I noticed a small amount of contact damage on my seat pan - see the upper pic. I used a large step drill to cut out the plastic and provide some extra clearance.

The engine now spins over with authority and I can count on a few more years of reliable juice.

NOTE: If anyone has pics of the earlier small battery box and battery, I would like to have copies and permission to add them to this page. Thanks! JD
