1991 Audi
Coupe Quattro

We bought this car in August 2009 as
a first car for my son Ian. He wanted a cool old rally type car and I wanted
ABS, AWD, and no turbo. The body and interior are pristine and the odometer said
69,000 miles when we picked it up in Chicago and drove it home to Washington
State. Mechanically the picture isn't so pretty, and there is a lot of rust
under the car.
This page is NOT intended to be a
comprehensive tech page for the car - I just wanted to document some of the work
I am doing so others may learn something useful. Getting parts for this car can
be a challenge...

The approximate route west from
Chicago. We detoured three hours north to Blaufergnugen (BLAUparts
- Audi Parts Service - Audi Parts Specialist) in Manitowoc, WI to stock up
on spares like belts, fluids and tune up parts.
Somewhere in Wisconsin, we stopped for a photo op.
Ian stands beside his new car. The skies had been dumping rain for nearly
two days.
Out on the Great Plains, nothing to see except Wall
Drug signs. The orange thing on the dash is a SPOT satellite tracker - it
allowed my wife to see exactly where we were at all times. It also gave us 911
capability when out of range of cell phones.
Ian busts along the road leading out of Badlands
National Park. The park fee was $15 and the place is an extreme disappointment.
It looks like a large gravel pit.
Stopped for a pee break half way along the Chief
Joseph Scenic Highway, 63-mile paved highway from Cody that leads high
into the Absaroka Mountains and the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River. This
is a WAY COOL road for an Audi Quattro - the speed limit is 65 mph, the road
surface is smooth, and the turns are tight.

COMPLETED REPAIRS:
New rubber hangers got the exhaust pipe up off the driveshaft. Full report soon.
The license plate screws and nut-serts were rusted solid and the nuts spun free
- I wonder how the detail shop got the plates off - with sheet metal snips? I
epoxied new nuts in front of the rear plate area, and a body shop installed new
ones in the front bumper.
Technical Downloads:
Audi
Coupe Quattro 20V Service Training 51.3MB.pdf Scan of a very rare and long
out of print general manual highlighting the changes in the vehicle. The book
has some very nice diagrams - the pics are high res and it will print well.
Audi MPI Engine Management Service Training 53MB.pdf Lots of useful
troubleshooting information! Generic electrical chart and lots of colored
diagrams. I especially liked Page 12 which describes the two ignition maps :
Ignition maps. The car defaults to the premium map
when started, If the ECU detects repeated knock, it switches to the regular map.
Notice that the regular map lower curve limits advance to 14 degrees up to about
4500 rpm and it doesn't start to do anything until 2000 rpm, while the premium
lower curve allows up to 19 degrees advance, and starts advancing at 1300 rpm.
